Direct Attach Storage (DAS)

This solution involves connecting hard drives directly to a server using serial attached SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)  It also includes connecting servers to an external HDD enclosure.

This is a great low cost, reliable and fast solution, but the drawback is that it leads to small data islands that can only be accessed by a single server. 

By not allowing the data or the storage space to be shared across the IT infrastructure, a Direct Attach Storage solution will become inflexible and the ability to use its capacity will decline.

Network Attach Storage (NAS)

This is the latest in storage technology. NAS allows storage devices to provide file access through an Ethernet infrastructure using iSCSI (internet SCSI). 

This enables quick and flexible distribution of network storage capacity, using existing infrastructure that can be accessed by a range of different operating systems.

Networked storage shares resource and allows for increased system usage, which reduces the overall cost of providing IT services and is scalable according to your business needs.

Storage Area Networks (SAN)
